The MQ 135 gas sensor module is designed to detect a wide range of gases, including ammonia (NH3), nitrogen oxides (NOx), alcohol, benzene, smoke, and carbon dioxide (CO2). Here’s a detailed description:
Working Principle:
The MQ 135 gas sensor module is a metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) type sensor, also known as a chemiresistor. It contains a sensing material, typically tin dioxide (SnO2), which changes its resistance when exposed to these gases. When the sensor is heated, oxygen molecules adsorb on the surface of the sensing material1. In the presence of target gases, these oxygen molecules react with the gases, reducing the surface density of adsorbed oxygen and allowing current to flow through the sensor. The resulting analog voltage values are measured to determine the concentration of the gas1.
Key Features:
Operating Voltage: 5V DC
Detection Range: 10 to 300 ppm for NH3, 10 to 1000 ppm for benzene, and 10 to 300 ppm for alcohol
Output: Analog voltage (0-5V) and digital output (TTL logic)
Preheat Duration: Approximately 20 seconds
Sensitivity: Can be adjusted using a potentiometer
Applications:
Air Quality Monitoring: Detecting harmful gases in the environment.
Environmental Safety: Ensuring safety in sensitive environments like laboratories.
Industrial Applications: Monitoring air quality in various industrial settings.
Limitations:
Non-Specific: The MQ-135 sensor cannot distinguish between different gases; it only detects their presence.
